Niamh Dwyer named Superleague Player of the Year 2008-9 season.


Niamh Dwyer has been named Basketball Ireland's Superleague Player of the Year for the 2008-9 season.

Niamh played outstanding basketball this season and was also awarded MVP in the National Cup Final and in the Superleague Final.

Mark Scannell named Phillips Sports Manager of the month for January 2009.


Mark Scannell, Head Coach at Glanmire has been named the Phillips Sports Manager of the month for January 2009.

Mark, also the Irish Senior Women's Head Coach has been recognised for his excellent work in leading the club to a famous three-in-a-row of National Cup success.

In accepting the award, Coach Scannell said "I would like to dedicate this award to the girls (of Glanmire Team Montenotte Hotel) and of course my family whose patience allow me to put so many hours into the role. This award is for everyone involved with the club and I cannot praise the team highly enough, they are a real credit to the area."

Marie Breen named UCC Graduate of the Year 2008

Marie Breen, 2007 and 2008 Captain of Glanmire Team Hotel Montenotte has been chosen as UCCs 2008 Graduate of the Year. This award is given annually to the most distinguished student of the year. In making this award, both academic distinctions and the part played in the public life of the University are taken into consideration. As well as graduation with with a First-class honours Bachelor of Commerce degree in 2008, Marie has received major honours in Basketball including ‘Irish Times VHI Sportswoman of the Month’ for January 2007 and ‘Jury’s Hotel Sportsperson of the Month’ for January 2007, ‘Evening Echo Ladies Sportstar’ for the month of January 2008 and Red FM Cork Sportsperson of the Year for 2008. Marie played for Ireland at U16, U18, captained the U20 Irish team and has over 45 International Caps at senior level. The Graduate of the Year was announced at the 2008 Prizegiving Ceremony at UCC in February 23rd 2009 by Dr Michael Murphy, President, UCC. Maries chosen major was Management with minors in Accounting and Food Business.

Michelle Fahy Receives Garda Sportstar Award

Team Montenotte Hotel player and Irish senior women’s international, Michelle Fahy, received a ‘Garda Sportstar Award’ (Nov 16, 2007). Michelle received a Waterford Cut vase presented to her by Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy. Michelle was honoured for her sporting endeavours along with Kerry Footballer Aidan O’Mahony, Rugby player Darragh Hughes, Junior All Ireland Kilkenny medal winner, Noelle Curran and All-Ireland Hurler Eddie Brennan. Michelle has bounced back from her injury woe last season to help Ireland to a bright European Championship campaign, which included a 55-50 win over Norway. Meanwhile, Team Montenotte Hotel are enjoying an unprecedented string of 8 successive victories in the Womens SuperLeague. A fantastic month for Michelle was topped off with the news that she was named ’Basketball Ireland’s Womens Player of the Month’ for October.

Hotel Montenotte Continues Glanmire Sponsorship

Glanmire Ladies Basketball Club is delighted to announce the continued support of Hotel Montenotte for the forthcoming 2007-8 season. Hotel Montenotte will continue their support of the Glanmire Womens Superleague Team (Team Montenotte) and extend their support to the under 18 and under 20 womens teams. Team Montenotte has grown in strength for the coming season through the addition of Jennifer Strong (Dayton, Ohio), Grainne Dwyer, a former wildcat and international player, and some outstanding talent from the under 20 and under 18 teams.

This year the club has thirteen players on Irish national teams, two at under 16, four at under 18, 2 at under 20 and 5 players on the Senior Irish Ladies team including Captain Michelle Fahy. The Club is eagerly looking forward to the coming season and defending it's 2007 under 18, under 20 and Womens Superleague National Cup titles.


Jessica Scannell receives Irish Examiner National Junior Sports Stars Award

"Jessica Scannell made history in January by qualifying for three National
Cup finals with Vienna Woods Glanmire. If that wasn't enough the Cork
teenager then captained the U18 side to victory over Maree and was named MVP in their last gasp win over Killester in the U20 decider. Scannell, who made her Superleague debut at the tender age of 15, has represented Ireland at a number of age groups and will captain the Irish side contesting the U18 European Championships in June 2007."

Sportswoman of the month award for Marie Breen

Marie Breen has been crowned January’s (2007) Irish Times Vhi Healthcare Sportswoman of the Month. The Glanmire captain claimed the award for her heroic performance at the National Cup Final last month, where she led the team to a 89 75 victory over UL in a thrilling final. This victory demonstrated the very essence of cup competition with table toppers UL facing Glanmire who were second from bottom in the SuperLeague. The form book was thrown out the window with the Cork club producing a brilliant performance at the National Arena to emerge victorious and complete an amazing treble for the club as they also won the National Under-18 and Under-20 cups on the same weekend.

Breen’s display will live long in the memory as the captain led from the front, scoring 29 points with 12 of those coming in the last quarter of this ti
ght encounter. Marie will now go forward as a nominee for the Irish Times Vhi Healthcare Sportswoman of the Year Award, which will be held in January 2008. Commenting on the announcement, Vincent Sheridan, Chief Executive, Vhi Healthcare said; "Marie’s contribution to Glanmire’s cup final win was inspiring to all. There was little doubt that her display duly deserved the recognition of most valuable player (MVP) in the final."
